FRUIT GLEANING

"Gleaning is the art of harvesting otherwise unused fruits and veggies from local backyards and farms in order to connect them with bellies that need and want them!" - The Good Food Collective

FRUIT GLEANING

Healthy Community Food Systems, FLC Environmental Center, Bear Smart Durango and the Colorado State University Extension Office established a fruit gleaning program, a website to match residents with excess fruit with those desiring fruit. The goal of the program was to feed the community instead of bears.

Following these humble beginnings, this program is now The Good Food Collective, a coalition effort to reclaim local, fresh food to feed people, build food justice, spark the economy, support farmers, strengthen the local food system and build a regional community.

The Good Food Collective has a fruit tree registry allowing residents to list and locate excess fruit, they provide harvest how-to guides and rent out harvest kits, and they host community and custom gleaning events organized around building community, reducing food waste, feeding people and saving bears.
